Reading translated literature always offers a profound opportunity to delve into the roots of a culture’s history. White Blood broadens readers’ perspectives with its richly translated narrative.

The book masterfully navigates the dark side of twentieth-century Punjab, shedding light on the unjust societal behaviors of the time. The narrative is remarkably crafted with multiple perspectives, where each character illuminates both the positives and negatives of society.

The story begins with a ticket officer catching a ticketless traveler, only to realize the man is the widely acclaimed writer Gupteshwar, whose knowledge transforms him forever.

As Gupteshwar narrates the tale, a series of heart-wrenching incidents unfolds. Themes such as cruelty, casteism, patriarchy, orthodox practices, abuse, violence, and betrayal mark Gurudei’s sufferings. Conversely, Sundri, despite facing inequality, casteism, corruption, and heartbreak, strives to bring about change, advocating for women’s education and the punishment of criminals.

The brilliance of the narration is complemented by the meticulous character development, where each character serves a purpose, imparting lessons and awakening the readers. Prominent male characters like Bachan Singh and Rodu support Sundri in her fight for righteousness, while antagonists like Pala Singh and Pandit expose the unrighteousness and hypocrisy in society.

The book beautifully weaves words into layers of creative expression and storytelling, providing a compelling lens on societal norms in a lyrical style. The climax, following the tales of two women, is both shocking and terrifying.

The plot’s twists and turns, combined with a gripping storyline, make this book a powerful tool for understanding the complexities of society.
